Difference between FOB, CIF, CNF & EXW

When purchasing with Chinese suppliers, you will often be asked: what kind of price do you want? FOB? CIF? CNF? or EXW? It can be confusing, especially when it is the first time you buy things from Chinese suppliers. So what are they? What do they mean?

FOB:Free on Board

Or Freight on Board. This basically means that the cost of delivering the goods to the nearest port and loading on board is included. To be more clear, it includes Product cost, Local exporting fees/customs, Delivery of your order to the nearest port in the supplier's country. As the buyer, you are responsible for the shipping from the port of the supplier's country and other fees associated with getting the goods to your country/address.

CIF – Cost, Insurance and Freight

In this case, the price is based on FOB price and also includes sea freight charges and insurance to deliver the goods to your nearest port. You will be in charge of taking goods to your place or warehouse.

CNF – Cost & Freight

Or Cost, no insurance, Freight. Similar to CIF only this time insurance is not included.

EXW- Ex-work.

The price is simply just the manufacturer’s price. No other price is included. All other costs are the buyer's responsibility.

To choose the appropriate price for you, you need to understand what are they. And it depends on the size and weight of your order, consider carefully and thoughtfully about your situation.

Hope you can have a wonderful buying experience with Chinese suppliers!
